IN CHARACTER

Name: Matthew Michael Murdock
Canon: Marvel Cinematic Universe: Netflix's Daredevil
Canon Point: Toward the end of Defender's episode 1x8 plus six months of CRAU
Age: 37

History: Canon history is here. His previous game was Pathema and he spent six months there in terms of the people he will know and the canons he came across. Matt arrived on the island and came face-to-face with several people from home including Frank Castle, Karen Page and Luke Cage. He was forced to face the awkwardness of his actions back in New York and the painful loss of his first love Elektra.

Matt spent six months in the game as a pawn of the god Eros and at first he resisted the need for sexual contact. Because of this resistance, Matt allowed his collar to tighten into the danger zone before asking for help. Even once he eased into day-to-day life on the island, Matt resisted the urge to find sexual partners beyond people he knew or women he felt comfortable around. Then he met Luke Skywalker and they formed a instant bond. Matt found himself drawn to Luke over and over again even though he knew forming such a permanent connection was dangerous in Eros' world.

But Matt fell in love with Luke anyway, despite his own history and that of his new situation. He did have moments of doubt as he explored his new sexuality given his Catholic upbringing. Loving Luke eased these fears and Matt fell more and more in love with the young Jedi the more time they spent together. Telling Luke how he felt was one of the best days of his life and when Luke was sent home, Matt fell apart and asked that he be sent home as well, believing life without Luke wasn't worth staying on the island for.

Personality:

Matt's morality is the strongest part of his personality. Having been raised Catholic, Matt uses his faith to inform how he sees the world and how he interacts with people. To Matt, black is black and white is white. He struggles to understand people who see the world in shades of gray even as he admits life allows for moral flexibility. The biggest example of this is his relationship with Frank Castle. Matt believes killing people as a form of justice is wrong, and he spends almost an entire night chained to a chimney talking to Frank about his actions despite Frank believing otherwise. Matt believes you should only use other means to exact justice when the legal system has failed you, and then you should only use those actions to bring the wrong-doer back into the legal system to face the justice they escaped.

Matt is stubborn, which can lead to him being unwilling to see the other side of an argument when he believes he is in the right. He is always the person who fights to save innocent people from the corrupt and dangerous side of New York City. When Matt's stubborn nature clashes with other people's needs, Matt’s actions can often lead to disaster. His toxic relationship with Elektra is a good example of this. Matt is so focused on saving her that he risks his own life to try and turn her back to the light. His single-minded nature leads to his own death even though Matt knows his friends are waiting for him to come back home.

Unlike many Marvel heroes who tend to hide their emotions, Matt is the complete opposite, deeply emotional and very open about sharing them. He cries in front of people, gets furiously angry and falls in love faster and harder than most people. He sees no shame in this, because his father always taught him that sharing emotions was healthy and something to be expressed with people you cared about. He is also a very forgiving person, willing to give anyone who hurts him a second or third chance despite what they might have done to him. He is also deeply loyal to everyone he considers a friend, willingly giving up being Daredevil when his friends Karen and Foggy ask him to, and even as he struggles to let go of his heroic identity.

Matt has a very low sense of self-worth due to his upbringing. He is proud he pulled himself up by his bootstraps, but he also feels as though he has never escaped the loss of his family. This leads him to place more value on other people’s lives than his own and put the feelings of both his friends and enemies first, while at the same time dismissing his own pain. He also struggles to forgive himself, often turning to the church to do it for him.

Matt is a very charming and charismatic individual. He flirts shamelessly with people he is attracted to and makes friends very easily. His friend Foggy has commented on this several times, mentioning that Matt can find beautiful women in any room and zero in on them. While Matt flirts openly and easily, he gets awkward when people flirt with him, unsure of how to react when someone else, man or woman, makes the first move. He has a sharp sense of humor and he's able to make fun of himself and others without being cruel.

Because he has been blind for so long, Matt is able to deal with awkward reactions to his disability with grace and gentle amusement. He freely admits that he wishes he could see again, but he is also aware that being blind has made him a much stronger person. When he makes friends, Matt gravitates to other outcasts and he hates bullies with a passion, because he remembers what it was like to be an outcast himself. He is also quick to call people out for stupid behavior even while he commits those same stupid actions himself. He never forces his morals on anyone else and he never lectures people unless he's sure they are willing to listen first.

Abilities/Skills:

  • Echo location, aka "radar sense", which allows Matt to see the sound waves that bounce off objects and thus allowing him to see the object as if it is on fire.
  • Heightened sense of taste, touch, and hearing which allows Matt to hear heartbeats, smell individual scents, and read regular print with his finger tips.
  • Advanced hand-to-hand combat training.

Items:

Matt will be arriving wearing the Daredevil armor sans the helmet which is in Midland Circle. He will also have his bully clubs which can turn into his cane in a pinch. He will also be coming in very bruised and battered with a stab wound on his left side and with broken ribs from the collapse of Midland Circle, so he will need medical care as soon as he arrives.

SAMPLES

Network Sample:

[Matt appears on the network looking confused and unhappy. He's leaning against a metal wall and looking upward. He has no idea the device has turned itself on and even if he did he wouldn't care much. He's lost, a broken man and looking for some sort of guidance from somewhere. His hands move as if he is counting beads on a rosary as he speaks in a soft, shattered tone.]

I don't know if you can hear me this far out of in space, but I have no one else to turn to and I need help.

[Matt takes a deep breath and his voice becomes firmer as he speaks as if he's drawing strength from the familiar words.]

Why, God... why have you asked me to give up so much, when I get hardly anything in return? You gift me with powers and when I use them, people I love get hurt. You give me a loving heart only to break it over and over again. What do you want from me? What is my place in all this?

[Matt slams his fist down on the floor and winces when it hurts.]

Why can't my life just make sense? Have you deserted me because I didn't follow the path Stick set me on? Did you not give human beings free will so they could make their own choices? I have tried to live my life as a man of faith, but it doesn't seem like it's ever enough. So please... tell me what you want from me. Give me a sign... any kind of sign. Just so that I know you're still there.

[His voice drops again back into that soft shattered tone.]

Please.
